weekend

By jelly | January 5, 2009

Not the most amazing weekend, but sometimes, especially after holidays, uneventful is good.

Friday night I had sometime to myself as the wife and kids went to a lights display. So I got up to some good Shaun White snowboarding action. I’m getting up to the point where the missions are harder to complete and take usually 2 times to get both missions completed.

Saturday, I sat around most of the day doing things around the house and then went out for dinner. Dinner was good, although hardly inexpensive.

Sunday went to the movie bolt. its okay, however not an amazing movie. All of us agreed it would be a better movie if bolt did have superpowers rather than just thinking he does.

Shaun White Snowboarding

By jelly | January 2, 2009

I received Shawn White Snowboarding for Wii for Christmas and finally got around to playing it. Its a fun game but I have to say, playing it with the controller sucks compared to playing it on the Wii fit board.

Using the board makes it so much more fun and is now my favorite game we own. The hardest thing with playing on the board is not leaping off of it, if you do there is a warning not to or your fat ass might break it :) I’ve only played a couple of hours so far but its the only game that I think about playing when I’m not. One thing I noticed is while playing it my ankles actually get sore. So I must be getting some kind of exercise while playing it :0

I highly recommend it.

holidays

By jelly | December 30, 2008

these holidays are really getting to my system.   I don’t know which day it is and I’m extremely tired when I wake up.  I’ll be happy to get back on a schedule after all this is over.

I went skating this weekend.

By jelly | December 29, 2008

For the first time in probably 8 years I went ice skating yesterday.  I had to use rented skates because my last ones were converted into a mouse house in my shed last year.  (I really need to buy a new pair).  We went to the Southlands mall where we were told they had put in a skating rink.  When we arrived yes there was a rink, it was very small, probably about 40′ x 80′.  It looked very small from the car but when we got on it, it wasn’t that bad.  Being from canada where I can take you to numerous places to skate for free, I had a little problem with the $9.00 per person entry fee but it is refridgerated (i’m assuming since it was frozen and it was 51 degrees outside yesterday) so I guess thats life in the south in the big city ;-) .  In someone elses skates and not having set foot on ice in 8 years I was a little shaky, not shaky like everyone else who couldn’t stand upright on their skates and instead had their ankles leaning over to one side.  I maily just didn’t have as much confidence as I used to.  Although after skating for a little while most of it came back to me, however I coudn’t get up to speed to test everything out because of the size of the rink.

One thing I did notice once I got off the ice was the muscles in the leg are totally different that what you use running or doing any other exercise.  The outsides of my legs were acting like I just did a huge workout when realistically I just skated for about 15 minutes.  I am difinitely going to get myself some better skates and start skating on a regular basis.  After skating for maybe 10-15 times I might be able to think about playing hockey again which will help get myself back into shape.

dentist

By jelly | December 17, 2008

So I made a dentist appointment last week.  Come in for a check up and cleaning that is way over due.

Of course after I made the appointment, about 3 days later I started getting a tooth ache.  Well ffwd a little and I go in and low and behold I need a root canal.  So I had that pleasure yesterday.  Ignore the extra cost and the pain what I’m upset about is that took over my appointment so now I have to go back today for the cleaning :(

then in 2 weeks go back to have the check up and finish off the root canal.

stupid is as stupid does

By jelly | December 14, 2008

Well as for being stupid and not careful I think I win the prize.  I was putting up xmas lights today.  And I kept thinking all week that I should do this but I should do it only when the wife was home in case something happened.

Then I convinced myself that I’ve been on ladders lots of times and that I’ve never fallen badly :)   I’ve fallen off before where the ladder was sliding to the right or left because I didn’t bother to put it on flat ground but I was always able to jump to safety and since I wasn’t going to be too high, except for when I did the second story, and I’ll make sure I’m more careful on that one, then it wasn’t a big deal.

Well saturday comes along and its really windy, didn’t help so I figured I would just rush through it to get it done.  got the first section of and everythign was good, I got blown off the ladder once but as said it wasn’t a big deal because I was only doing it on the lower roof and could jump onto the grass.

then came the lights over the front entryway.  Figured I would put the ladder up on the deck (nice new trex one)  I remember looking down when I was putting up the ladder and noticed that the bottom was in snow.  I think I kicked the snow away from the bottom but it would still defintiely be wet, as I was only climbing up one story, about 9′ it wasn’t a big deal.  I’d just run up the ladder and get on the roof.

Well as I got to the top and was about to put a foot on the roof the ladder slipped out from under me, not tilting to the side or falling back the bottom slid out from under me, leaving me only one way to go down.

The rest is kind of a blur I dont’ know which way I landed, however I’m pretty sure it was flat on my back, on top of the ladder I think or maybe just on the deck.  I remember from there rolling over to my stomach and being afraid to move because I was sure I would be hurt.  I don’t know what time it was either at the time and no one else was home so I’m not sure if I was out for a bit or not.  eventually I was able to move and figured out that although sore and a little groggy I seemed to be okay and moved myself from the front yard to the couch inside the house.   I had a really bad head ache at this time but other than that seemed good.  a couple parts of my body on my arms and hands seemed really tender but that was it.

The wife came home about 20 minutes later and wanted to take me to the hospital because I might have a concussion.  I tried to assure her I was fine however she is still mad we didn’t go.

All and all I seem okay, my neck muscles starting aching the next day and continue to ache now.  I assume they tried to stop my head from hitting the deck and stressed themselves.  My abs and back mussels are also really tender but considering I did a back flop from 9′ onto a wood deck I feel pretty good.

Dish Network and Turbo HD

By jelly | December 13, 2008

Well I must say I’m very happy with Dish Network and Turbo HD.  The receiver is top notch and responds very quickly.  The DVR portion of the receiver is very easy to use and to configure and I prefer it over tivo in many ways.  The benefits are mostly small little things but they fix alot of annoyances that I had with the tivo.

#1  When selecting a recorded program it has the option to start over.  I don’t know how many times on tivo I would see resume, select that only to see that it was at near the end of the program then I would sit there and have to rewind it the whole way to start over or ffwd to the end then have to select it again from the list.  This makes it so that I can start from the start regarless of where it currently sits.

#2 Search titles by content not just title.  my wife has been using this alot. searching for christmas shows rated G, for our daughter.  you can see all the specials and not need to know their names beforehand.

#3 Actually knowing how much room is left on the DVR.  on TIVO when it filled it would delete shows however you never knew how close you were.  on the Dish DVR it clearly states you have 20hours of HD 120 hours of regular remaining, then it will start deleting.

#4 Ability to watch recorded shows on two tv’s.  When I’m banished to the basement, living with 3 women will do that.  I don’t have to search for something on live tv, I can watch recorded shows down there as well.

#5 guide shows only subbed channels.  Tivo shows them all, so I’d always see items in the guide I wanted to watch only to have it say you must subscribe to this channel to watch.

#6 volume of HD.  Dish has so much HD programing its staggering.

#7 rating system.  on TIVO I would have programs that had NR getting through the rating block I haven’t seen this yet on DISH.

auto bailout

By jelly | December 12, 2008

I’m so happy that the auto bailout failed.  Especially since it hinged on a concession by the UAW and they refused to take the concession and that killed it.  That just goes to say they don’t care about the companies only that they can stay in power.  Let the auto companies file for bankrupcy break the unions and then come back for the money.

Bush is looking at still bailing them out but I really hope he doesn’t it would be a big mistake.  And would show favoritism for one industry while leaving others to fend for themselves.
