Hosting it yourself or with hosting company

By jelly | May 17, 2008

This decision is one I always ask myself.  Should I host the site on my servers or put it on someone elses.  In the past I’ve used Rackspace, didn’t go that well, this site is hosted on hostmonster.com, seems ok, I’ve had some downtime here and there but its mostly been up, but I’m not that happy with the speeds.   My work servers are hosted at our location which works good, is fast and easy to maintain, however if I loose power for a long period of time or something goes wrong with the local loop I’m going to be offline.

I have a new site that I want to role out soon, I just have to get the programming bugs out of it, and I’ve been thinking of where to put it.  I could put it on this account and it wouldn’t cost me anything, but also that is true of my work servers, however since it has nothing to do with my company I’m hesitant to put it there. decisions decisons…….

Also Ad revenue,  Does anyone make money with ad revenue?  How much traffic do you need to have to a site before you can expect to make money?  It seems you only realy get money if someone clicks the link, not just impressions, and I can tell you I almost never click links on any site I go to.  I see the ads layout on so many sites my brain is just wired to ignore it.  unless a specific word catches my eye its a no go for me.
