1st Linux desktop test

By jelly | February 29, 2008

Today will be the first all out test.  We have a linux box ready to swap out a users windows box.

The user is one of the easiest and one of the most critical.  They are easy because they basically only surf the web and answer emails.  They are the most critical because they are notoriously negative and if anything goes wrong they will not hesitate to stand up on their chair and scream, this sucks what a stupid idea.  If they have problems today I’m sure that it will not be work related, it will be that they cannot get something to run which they are used to, but those items must be addressed as well to keep everyone happy and positive.

The box they will be using is very basic.  Ubuntu 7.10, running Evolution email client, connecting to our exchange box via the exchange owa (Open web access, or web mail).  We have loaded all of the browser plug ins I believe they will need (flash, java). We have loaded the majority of codecs so I don’t have to hear that they can’t open some video someone sent them.  Java has been loaded since our custom applications are all java based.   Also all of the Beryl componenets have been loaded so that they have the pretty bells and whistles.
